What is excessive dispensing? - from the pages of the latest edition of IPJ

What is excessive dispensing?
USA. Drug Topics reports that the state of North Carolina has passed a law on excessive prescribing dispensing rates - with no explanation of what excessive dispensing means.
The state is the first in the country to pass such a law. A state Pharmacy Board, can discipline retail pharmacy and pharmacies it feels are turning out prescriptions at a pace that endangers public health or safety. Board Executive Director, David Work, says that the rule is a response to pharmacists complaints about work-load - including peak fill rates of 600 to 750 prescriptions per day at two independent pharmacies.
