Dear friends,
Although our mutual indignation about the fact that non-
pharmacists can be head of a school of pharmacy (or pharmacy
faculty), I think we should not be carried away by out emotions.
A school of pharmacy basically has 2 purposes: teaching and
conducting research. As an academic institution the basic issue is
to form critical people, who on sideline, maybe are going to be
pharmaceutical professionals, but also might end up in research,
administration or the industry. For the latter three purposes it is not
necessary to be a pharmacist. A good university degree is
sufficient.
>From that point of view anyone could be dean, as long as they have
the scientific mind needed, and are dedicated to improving
research and teaching.
In most universities I know, the pharmacist degree is one of the
options for the students, but not the single one.
Although I, as a community pharmacist, would appreciate a
pharmacist as head of school, that might also be limiting the
academic formation and the opportunities for the sciences
contributing to the degrees.
