Reginald:
It depends on the criticality of the material being supplied, and the
level of your company's concern for the supplier's control of quality.
In the case of some active ingredients and suppliers, people have been
known to use a "man in the plant" to continuously monitor the
manufacturer. In other cases people only go out when a problem occurs
or every two years which ever comes sooner.
The point to remember is that there are other methods of control and
monitoring that can be employed in combination with actual auditing.
Some places may audit the first time out and then use questionnaires,
and then audit again after a certain period.
