Jeff,
B.E. Kirsop and J.J.S. Snell, 1984. Maintenance of Microorganisms, A
Manual of Laboratory Methods, "Storage in liquid or vapour phase of
nitrogen is the most universally applicable of all preservation methods.
Fungi, bacteriophage, viruses, algae, protozoa, bacteria, yeasts,
mammalian cells and tissue cultures have all been successfully preserved.
Although with some microorganisms a high proportion of cells in a
population may die on cooling and warming and population changes may
occur, virtually no further loss occurs on storage. Losses may be
reduced by the use of cryoprotectants and adjustment of growth
conditions and the rate of cooling and warming. For a detailed
discussion of these factors see Morris, 1981...."

Hope this helps.
