Biography

Tony D'Emanuele is a senior lecturer in pharmaceutics at the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, University of Manchester. After graduating from the School of Pharmacy, University of London in 1984, Tony undertook his postgraduate studies at the University of Bath in the area of responsive electrophoretic drug delivery. Tony took up his current appointment after an eighteen-month postdoctoral fellowship at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he investigated the use of ultrasound to modulate drug release from biodegradable implants.

Tony's research interests focus on the delivery of bioactive molecules. His major area of interest concerns the development of pulsatile and responsive drug delivery systems. This work involves the novel application of polymers (including dendrimers and biodegradable polymers) to the development of delivery systems where release is responsive to a patient's varying requirements. A second major interest involves the delivery of genes into cells by means of sonication. In addition to his scientific interests, Tony is also interested in information technology and was responsible for the creation of PharmWeb, the first structured pharmaceutical information resource on the Internet.

Whilst at Manchester Tony has been a visiting scientist at the Department of Pharmacy, University of São Paulo and also the Department of Chemical Engineering, Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Tony has been invited to give over 50 lectures, has received four prizes, has one patent, and is the author of over 90 publications. Tony is presently Chairman of the UK-Ireland Controlled Release Society.
