The Controlled Release Society (CRS) was founded in the United States over two decades ago to advance the science and technology of controlling the release and delivery of active agents. It is recognised worldwide as the premier professional society in this still developing field. The CRS is establishing local "chapters" of the organisation around the World and the UKCRS was formed in 1994 to cater for our needs here in the UK. In 1998 the United Kingdom-Ireland Controlled Release Society was formed. The UKICRS intends to address a broad range of research fields based on controlled release which include agriculture, veterinary, food and cosmetic sciences. The Committee has drawn up several key aims and objectives, principally:
When the Global Network Committee of the CRS initiated the Local Chapter activity almost a decade ago, the UK Local Chapter was one of the first few that were established by the highly enthusiastic local members. I was the Chairman of the Global Network Committee from 1994 to 1996, and at that time I worked very closely with the founders of the UKICRS. I still remember the energy and passion that the UKICRS members demonstrated at that time. All those memories provide me with special pleasure and pride for the continued success of the UKICRS.
The achievements of the UKICRS clearly shows that the CRS Local Chapter initiative was indeed a good one and remains to be a good one. Currently, there are 18 CRS Local Chapters, but the UKICRS continues to be the most successful one, and it becomes a model local chapter throughout the world. On behalf of all the CRS members around the globe, I send my gratitude for your dedication and support for the controlled release science.
