What is Dermol Cream?

Dermol Cream is a topical (on the skin) treatment for very dry skin conditions such as eczema or dermatitis and is one of the leading brands of antimicrobial emollient in the UK.

Dermol creams can be used as a leave-on cream or as a soap substitute to help repair and soften skin. It’s a dual-action treatment that contains both powerful moisturising ingredients and antimicrobials.

How does the cream work?

Dermol cream provides two key benefits to dry skin. Firstly, the active ingredients of liquid paraffin and isopropyl myristate soothe and rehydrate the skin so it can lock in moisture. Secondly, benzalkonium chloride and chlorhexidine dihydrochloride target and destroy Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) bacteria which when left untreated can result in inflamed skin and worsening eczema symptoms. Overall you should have softer and less irritated skin.

What does Dermol Cream treat?

Dermol cream is effective at treating itching, scaling, crusting, redness, inflammation, and irritation caused by dry skin conditions such as:

The cream treats skin conditions such as:

  • Eczema
  • Dermatitis
  • Psoriasis

With regular use, you can see an improvement in the condition and appearance of your dry skin. It is not however suitable for treating acne.

Directions

How do you apply Dermol Cream?

As a dual-action product, there are two main ways of using Dermol cream depending on your skin’s needs.

For use as a leave-on product:

  • Cover the affected areas with as much Dermol 500 Cream as needed.
  • Gently massage into the skin, allowing any excess cream to absorb.
  • Reapply as often as necessary.

As an alternative to soap:

  • Wash with Dermol Cream instead of your regular soap or shower gel. (Please note it will not foam or lather).
  • After washing, use a soft towel to pat the skin dry (try to avoid rubbing the skin as this can make dry skin conditions worse).

You may want to bring a supply to work or school so you can keep up with applications and prevent flare-ups. Recommended use will be suggested by your GP or pharmacist.

Can it be used on the face?

Yes, Dermol Cream can be used on the face but you must take care when applying the cream around sensitive areas such as your eyes.

How long does it take to work?

How quickly you will see an improvement in your skin depends on the skin condition and severity of your symptoms. Having said that, emollients like Dermol Cream can be very effective at breaking the itch-scratch cycle which when left untreated can further damage the skin and make it very difficult to manage.

Dry skin conditions make the skin very itchy. Scratching the area relieves the itching temporarily but also damages the skin which can lead to infections, again leading to more itching and the cycle continues. The regular use of emollients or moisturisers can help with this and you may see a difference in your skin in just a few weeks.
